SunSketcher is a citizen science initiative that allows participants to capture images of the April 8th, 2024 Great North American Eclipse. Through collective engagement, a substantial database of images will be produced, enabling scientists to enhance their modeling of the Sun.

"We don't know the precise shape of the Sun?" you may ask. While scientists possess a good understanding, there is room for increased accuracy. The goal is to measure the Sun's oblateness with exceptional precision, accurate to a few parts in a million.

The application utilizes your location to determine the exact times of totality, ensuring automated capturing of eclipse data, alleviating the need for manual adjustments. Following totality, you can opt to upload the captured photos, along with additional location details and camera settings, to our data servers for scientific evaluation.

What is citizen science?

Citizen science involves collaboration between volunteers from the general public and researchers in collecting and analyzing extensive datasets. Participation is open to everyone; formal citizenship is not a prerequisite.

How will this project advance heliophysics research?

The project aims to establish a comprehensive database of Baily's Bead images, facilitating precise determination of the Sun's shape with exceptional accuracy. Similar to how Earth's surface shape aids in understanding internal flows, this database will enable investigations into solar interior dynamics. Moreover, knowing the exact Sun's shape can aid in testing and potentially challenging various gravity theories, including General Relativity.

Are there specific requirements to participate? Can non-scientists get involved?

There are no specific qualifications needed to join. The objective is to engage a broad and varied community of SunSketchers.

Why participate in SunSketcher?

SunSketcher offers an inclusive opportunity for anyone with a smartphone to contribute meaningfully to cutting-edge scientific endeavors. No special equipment is necessary besides your phone. By registering on our platform, you will be recognized as a contributor, potentially even entering the Guinness World Records list.

Where should I be on the day of the eclipse?

You can participate from anywhere within the path of totality.

Can I observe the eclipse while using SunSketcher?

Absolutely! You are encouraged to witness the eclipse independently (with appropriate safety measures) while allowing SunSketcher to operate on your device. To ensure optimal image quality, avoid touching your phone during totality. The application concludes its scientific processes shortly after totality ends, permitting you to resume phone usage.
